The X factor

by astronut @ Sunday, Oct. 15, 2006 - 12:35:24 pm

I've been watching some of the X factor recently to see what all the fuss has been about in previous years.

In general it makes me cringe. I think the fact that some aspiring artist stands a chance to make it big is a side issue for this programme. I think the main aim of the program is to entertain us all with the endless emotional manipulation of people. The bad comments made by the panel are hyped up to make the whole thing exagerrated. for example, a typical hopeful stands in front of the panel and gives it their all. If they are particularly bad, the panel could end it quickly just by saying 'next', but no, they have to let them carry on while they laugh at them and then pass snide remarks. Another techique to spin things out is to delay the verdict as much as possible to get the candidate really hanging on. for example, Louis has said 'yes' and Simon has said 'no', so it all depends on what sharon says. She will say 'and I have to say....' followed by a 5 second pause; '..... yes!'. Oh, lets all jump for joy.

And anyway, I would like to know what credentials sharon Osbourne has to sit in judgement, apart from the fact that she is the wife of Ozzy? In fact I would say that if the X factor had taken place many years ago, and Ozzy Osbourne had appeared as a contender, he would have been laughed out to comments such as ' you can't be serious can you? You've got no melody!'

And that leads me onto my final comment: Wether someone is successful in music does not always depend on how good their actual voice is, although of course it would help having an amazing voice. It more depends on who you are and who you know, and all the other circumstances. for example, do you think David Bowie has the x factor. In my opinion, yes, but not in his voice, which I think is reedy, and weak and a bit weird.

The plumbing course commences

by astronut @ Thursday, Oct. 12, 2006 - 05:29:53 pm

Well, I've started the plumbing course now. I was a bit apprehensive at first because it was a big change of routine, I was wondering if it was actually the right course for me to do; this plumbing business seems too much like hard work, what will I actually do with my skills when i've finished, will I actually pass or severely embarras myself.

Well after the 4th week I feel settled into it more and am more happy to continue. It is an 18 month course but can go on up to 2 years if I need to complete my practical assessments. I have started off soldering pipes together and have started to get the hang of that. then I will be going on to bending pipes into various shapes that I have previously drawn on paper with my fair hand. The ultimate practical test will be to fit a bathroom suite which will take up to 4 days, and there is a long way to go before that....
