When I write a post I sometimes wonder if it is worth it. Does what I write have any meaning and is anyone else interested in it. I wonder if I want to clog up the internet with dross, but perhaps someone somewhere will be interested in what I write, although there is often not a lot of evidence to show that, i.e. by the lack of comments. If blogging is no more than a catharsis for the soul then perhaps that justifies it? Or perhaps if it amuses people?

You've used some challenging terms there:
"Meaningful" - to whom? Some blogging is about baring of souls regardless of who listens, a kind of ventilation if you like. Others blog to entertain, to show off or to share.
"Is it worth it?" - Hey, depends. Looking for someone to pluck you from obscurity? Then no. Looking to create some discipline in your life, either from a hook to hang things on perspective or to practice writing? Then yes, it'll work for you.
"Are others interested?" - Well, if yours is a bleating blog then poeple will stick it for a while, even try to offer advice, but eventually, without evidence of any impact, any lightening of mood, they'll peel off.
"The blog as cartharsis" - Loads of people are on here doing that. Good for them! Writing stuff down gets it out of one's veins in time.
"Lack of comments" - some people court "friends" as some kind of validation. You can accrue hundreds of friends" if you want - send invites. However, I prefer to have a small group who are vaguely interested in me BECAUSE I'm interested in them. It is a two way street. Blog friends are really correspondents, penpals if you will. Think of it like that.
